Comparing the Canon EOS R8, EOS R6 Mark II, and EOS RP

Posted on August 8, 2024September 15, 2024

This guide is a little different from our usual comparisons of cameras in that we have studied three cameras, the Canon EOS R8 vs EOS R6 Mark II vs EOS RP. If you have recently purchased the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, you are unlikely to sell it. We would not encourage you to do so. This Canon EOS R8 vs EOS R6 Mark II vs EOS RP Comparison is to see if it’s worthwhile to upgrade from the EOS RP camera to the R8. We thought that it would be worth comparing all three cameras at once, because the Canon EOS R8 has many of the same features as the R6 Mark II.

Canon EOS R8 has to be one of the most innovative cameras we have seen in recent times. The Canon EOS R8 is a unique camera. It has a small, compact body, but it also offers speed, power, and video capabilities. It will also appeal to professionals who are looking for a backup body that can keep pace with their workflow.

It’s also significantly less expensive than its predecessor, with a price tag of PS1699 for the Canon EOS R8. It combines that power and speed with the compact form factor of Canon’s EOS R System, the Canon EOS R. The RP was launched as the smallest, lightest, and cheapest mirrorless full-frame camera available. Canon had to compromise on some features in order to maintain its price. However, many people were able live with these compromises. The R8 offers the same small size, but also many of Canon’s latest features and technologies. Does this offer the best package for enthusiasts and photographers? Take a look.

Sensor

The sensor in the EOS R8 was originally developed by Canon for the EOS R6 Mark II. The sensor does not have a backside illumination nor is it stacked. However, the R6 and R8 were designed to be low-light capable.

The Canon EOS RP sensor does have a higher pixel count. You may see slightly more detail on the Canon EOS RP’s images at low ISOs. The R6 II will perform better with mid-to-high ISOs. The R6 II has also better noise reduction algorithms as well as processing.

Processor

Canon’s Digic X is used by the EOS R8 as well as the EOS R6 Mark II, while the EOS RP still uses the older processor. Digic x was launched in 2020, and it is capable of processing 4K at 120fps as well as 8K at 30fps. The Digic x also improved noise reduction and AF tracking abilities.

The Digic 8 is a good machine, but the R8 Mark II and R6 Mark III are the winners here because of their increased speed and power.
