From May 17 to July 21, 2024, Leica Gallery London will showcase “Silverlink,” an exhibition by acclaimed London photographer Simon Wheatley. His series represents an important period from 1998 to 2010, during which Wheatley documented the transformation of North London Line into Silverlink following its privatisation and explored diverse, often polarised neighbourhoods along this railway. At first inspired by his interest in social disparities but eventually evolving into a wider narrative about city dynamics during Blair years.
Simon Wheatley has become synonymous with dynamic urban photography, most notably through his groundbreaking book ‘Don’t Call Me Urban! The Time of Grime.’ His use of Kodachrome film brings another layer to his images that connects him with legendary photographers such as Bruce Davidson who employed this medium for telling powerful urban narratives.
The exhibition will offer a personalized and expansive view of London through Wheatley’s interactions and experiences throughout. One stand-out story in particular from his travels is his encounter with Barry, an antique shop owner in Portobello Road whose life encapsulated urban economic changes.
Visitors to the Leica Gallery will see 21 carefully curated Silverlink series images captured with Leica M systems and displayed for the first time ever. Additionally, signed copies of Wheatley’s book ‘Silverlink’ will also be available for sale.
