In the past few years, mirrorless cameras became more popular. In 2019, they surpassed DSLR sales. Sony is now a major player in the mirrorless camera market, Panasonic introduced four full frame mirrorless cameras along with Micro Four Thirds, and Fujifilm offers a variety of APS C and medium format cameras.
This brings us to Olympus. Olympus, while other manufacturers moved into the full-frame and mid-format markets, has remained committed to Micro Four Thirds. It helped develop and expand this format with Panasonic.
Next came 2020. Olympus was not the only company that suffered during the turbulent year. Rumours about the company’s exit from the camera business lingered all year. In Q3, it was revealed Olympus has formalised an agreement with Japan Industrial Partners to move the Olympus Imaging Business to them through a ‘anabsorption-type separation’.
In 2021 Olympus became OM Digital Solutions a company created by JIP. Olympus became OM System. launched its first lens with the new moniker. The OM-1 was the first camera to be released under this moniker. Olympus / OM System has had a difficult couple of years, especially with the creation of a brand and the transfer of ownership. OM System appears to have a good understanding of the market and the OM-1 is exactly what’s needed.
